Allanwaters Fishery System

Starts in Allanwater River 15 miles south of the camp and has its headwaters in Lake Seseganaga with is 15 wide and 20 miles long. The Allanwater River flows eight miles north though Sunray Lake to Lake Kawaweogama. The lake is five and one half mile south to north and four miles east to west. Allanwater Lodge is located about five miles down the lake. The unusual feature of the lake is the gravel esker that creates shallow and spawning areas right down the middle. The lake is populated with dozens of Islands, unnumbered bays, sand flats, shoals, weeded shallows. Depth range from seventy feet to weeded shallow bays. The lake is unique in another important way. The typical below water structures are formed by rock rubble, gravel and shear drop-offs near some islands and shoreline cliffs. The farthest south that we fish without portaging is twelve miles way, just south of Sunray Lake at Trout Rapids located two miles north of Lake Seseganaga. The Allan water after passing under the Via Rail Road bridge five hundred yards from the lodge, turns directly north into the Wabakimi Wilderness Provincial Park. Allanwater guest can fish the Allanwater River downstream for about a mile and one half by outboard after which the river is accessible by canoe only.

We are one of the few access points to Northern Ontario's Wabakimi Wilderness Provincial Park, a northern Ontario wilderness preserve larger in area than Wyoming's Yellowstone. Allanwater Lodge is the only lodge in a vast chain of lakes nestled at the confluence of the Brights and Allanwater rivers, Allanwater is 25 miles from the nearest road and our series of lakes are over seventeen miles from end to end, not including the rivers and over four miles wide and populated with hundreds of Islands and bays. We are easily accessible by train or float plane. You are not likely to every see another boat.

Access to the vibrant flowing waters of the regions two prominent river systems and many glacial formed lakes, offers fabulous trophy walleye fishing and northern pike fishing in northern Ontario all season long. After you leave the camp, you are soon in unknown virgin waters teeming with walleye and northern pike. Adding to the thrill of catching that trophy fish is the fulfillment of the desire many share for primitive areas and real wilderness of northern Ontario.

There are only a handful of such untouched places to go fishing in Canada or in the world today. The Allanwater managers are the custodians of a fishery that is so large and that has experienced so few fishing man hours each year for two generations and more that it is statistically impossible for the fishing that has been done could have had any effect on the productivity of the fishery. For thirty years we have been returning trophies to sire new generations, ensuring that the fishery was as good or better than we found it. Since the gene pool of the lunker pike, walleye, lake trout and book trout has never been damaged, the genes of the fish in the Allanwater fishery are the same that produced the big fish five thousand years ago are still carried in today's fingerlings and by the trophies that sired them. Trophies swim in the Allanwaters today by the thousands. The Allanwaters have never been advertised in the larger media, never featured on television or in magazines and only visited by a very few lucky fisherman families that have been returning to the Allanwaters year after year for the best remote wilderness fishing Canada has to offer!

The Bright Sand River's headwaters are in another mammoth lake called Wapakamaski Lake located fourteen miles to the south east and its east of Lake Seseganaga. Wapakamaski Lake is huge water system about fifteen miles long and three miles wide. The Bright River flows in a northwesterly reaching Antler Lake then continues three miles to Snowshoe Lake then two miles McEwen Lake which is four miles south east of Allanwater Lodge. Allanwater Lodge guest can fish this water system with one or two portages as far south as Antler Lake.

Mcewen lake narrows to a river that flows into the Allanwater River at the Via Train Bridge about five hundred yards from the camp.

The Allanwaters system is made up of an interconnected system of lakes and rivers that spans fifteen miles to seventeen miles long by four to ten miles wide, most of it accessible by outboard. Its almost impossible for one fisherman to fish all of the system in one life time.
